Movies - The Bridges of Madison County

What I could have potentially dismissed as a love story for adults turned out to be yet another Meryl Streep powerhouse performance. Obviously the lady can do no wrong. Given that the great Count Eastwood was perhaps the weaker link of the two, you can imagine how intense the movie must have been at times. As one critic rightly said, this is perhaps Clint's gift to women... and what a gift it was. I'd probably give the movie 8/10 based solely on Merely Streep's performance...

Based on a novel by Robert James Waller, it is the story of an Italian women Franchesca who comes to Iowa with her American husband and fantasies of how her life would be. She finds herself giving up on all her childhood dreams and losing herself in the mundane role of a country housewife till Robert, a Free Spirited National Geographic photographer loses his way to her doorstep. What transpires in the four days when her family is incidently away, is an absolutely heart warming tear jerking tale of unacquitted love.

HIGHS:
Meryl Streep's captivating screen presence

LOWS:
The supporting cast including Clint Eastwod cannot match Ms Streep's performance

FAVOURITE LOOK:
It amazes me how Meryl Streep manages to look so gorgeous and 'womanly' throughout the movie despite her skin coloured pumps and faded cotton dresses. Robert on the other hand could have worn his pants a little bit lower perhaps around the waist than pulling them up soooo high above his stomach practically.

The picnic, when Francesca finally lets her hair down was my favourite look by far. Symbolically, she was nothing like the woman we're used to seeing her as throughout the movie almost like a 4 day vacation from life and what a beautiful vacation it is.

FAVOURITE QUOTES:
Francesca: And in that moment, everything I knew to be true about myself up until then was gone. I was acting like another woman, yet I was more myself than ever before.

Robert: When I think of why I make pictures, the reason that I can come up with just seems that I've been making my way here. It seems right now that all I've ever done in my life is making my way here to you.

FINAL VERDICT:
I'd recommend the movie for a girls night in or an evening by yourself, I doubt it'll have equal appeal for the opposite sex. Highly recommended if you're a sucker for Romance
