20 GEN-Z WORDS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

July 4, 2022

Gen-Z words, slangs and phrases, I mean have you heard the Gen-Z group ever talk? Because I certainly get lost in translation and I will admit that I’ve Googled some parts of our talks so I don’t feel left behind.

Anyway, like every other generation, Gen-Z has some of their words that they use to communicate, and some even have made their way to the “dictionaries” (I know right?!). I feel like that the Gen-Z words have taken up a lot of space in their real life as well as social media.

So, ere are 16 Gen-Z words that you should know if you want to catch up with the “lit” kids.

SALTY

Gen Zs use this term when they’re feeling jealous.

HIGH-KEY

High-key is simply the opposite of being low-key.

SHEESH!

Sheesh is used to hype someone up if they’re looking good or doing something good.

BASIC!

If someone is regular, boring or does typical things, they are “basic”.

GHOSTED

To stop communicating with someone out of the blue (and come back on if it suits you).

“I was talking to this guy, but he ghosted me last week.”

DRIP

An outfit; usually refers to a really good one.

For example, if you saw an outfit you really like, you’d say “drip”.

Drip also refers to being “dripped” in expensive jewelry and diamonds.

IYKYK

Stands for “If you know, you know.” Used to describe an inside joke or something a certain community would understand.

SIMP

When someone publicly pours their heart out for someone, whether they know the person or not, or goes above and beyond for their significant other.

Example: “Did you see his Instagram post about how much he loves his girlfriend? He’s such a simp.”

GLO UP!

To go through a positive physical, mental, or spiritual change usually over a longer period of time.

“He had a major glow up over the summer.”

PERIODT

Add emphasis to a point made.

Example: “Beyonce gave us the greatest performance in music history, periodt.”

SUS

Short for “suspicious.” It typically means something is not as it may seem.

“That story is sus.”

WIG

An expression used when something completely blows you away. It would refer to the fact that, if you had a wig on, what happened would cause so much shock and admiration that it would fly off your head.

“Did you see that concert?! Wig!”

BOUJEE

Someone who enjoys the lavish and extravagant things in life.

For example: Did you see her Gucci fanny pack?”

“Yeah, she’s so boujee.”

CANCELLED

If someone does something the internet deems “problematic”, they are “cancelled”. It’s like you stop supporting something or someone by doing a number of things, including boycotting their work, products, or unfollowing on social media.

For example: “Did you see what R Kelly did to those women?”

“Yes, he’s definitely cancelled!”

DANK

When something is of high quality.

For example: “Did you see those dank memes I sent you?”

FLEX

Show off your possessions; may not necessarily be overt though. For example, you could be wearing something that’s rather expensive

“Flex on your ex” is another popular term the kids like to use, meaning that you’re showing your ex you’re doing better since the break-up.

You don’t necessary have to flex with tangible things though, you can flex with knowledge and wisdom too, for instance.

BOP

A really good song or beat.

“Listen to this new song—it’s a bop.”

SNACK

A snack is a person that you find attractive.

GUCCI

Somehow the Italian luxury fashion brand became a new way of saying “good” or “it’s all good”.

For example: “Is that fine with you?”

“Yeah man, it’s Gucci.”

NO CAP!

“I’m being serious”, “seriously”.

For example: “I could really do with a burger right now no cap.”

Note: we’ve drafted the article from multiple online sources and presented it as one.
