I can’t believe we’re saying this, but we’re going to tell you how to fake it till you make it in your career in 2023. So, if you’re already working or have landed your dream job and know that you’ve worked super hard for it and are qualified, what can you do make it last?
YOU AREN’T LYING
We all know how it is on social media, where no one is who they say they are. You can bet that whoever you meet on interact with online are an exaggerated version of who they are in real life. People love to boast, practically about everything, from their looks, to their worth, body shape, and even their relationships. But when talk about your career, faking it till you make it doesn’t mean that you pretend to have a skill set you do don’t have. By faking it, you are imitating pizazz and workplace confidence along with a sense of authority that you feel assured about. You just have to figure out the thin line between the two.
DRESS THE PART AND I MEAN IT SERIOUSLY
We live in a visual world where you are judged by how you look, what you wear long before they even open their mouth. And honestly, it’s the sad truth for women to be live with. And the same goes for our careers. Wearing something that doesn’t sit well with your persona might not be good idea, but a well put together look will do. And not putting an effort into how you look may be construed to mean that you are not ready for higher, more visible roles. Dressing for the job you want and not the one you have may be cliché but it’s solid advice. This, of course, goes hand in hand with your demeanour, looking people in the eye and a smile.
IT TAKES TIME
All good things take time, you know that. Faking it at the workplace is not any different. For eg. if you have big interview coming up, it’s a great opportunity, you have the skill set but you are a bundle of nerves. Confidence isn’t something you can get from a two-minute pep talk in the washroom right before the interview. You will need to prepare way in advance, affirm yourself, make sure you look great, know you can do this and then put your best foot forward even if you’re a wrecking ball of nerves!
JUST FOLLOW THROUGH
Despite the nerves, you bag the big cozy job or are already working. What now? Now you follow through. Don’t miss learning opportunities on the job because you are afraid of looking stupid. Ask questions, go out of your way to learn everything you need to learn about the job. It will make you confident in your role and this will show. You might learn something and ace it.
Despite all this, the big question remains, SHOULD YOU FAKE IT?
If you look around your workplace, you will see that it’s not always the person with the most degrees or experience that gets the job or the promotion. Almost always, it’s the person that’s well put together, the one who’s not afraid to toot their own horn and who values themselves. So, if you need to fake it to make it, by all means, go for it and make 2023 count!
